Testimonial from 42 years old infertility patient

I first came to see Kimberly in May 2006, highly skeptical about how acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) could help my problems. After having a back surgery in November 2004 and several failed attempts of fertility treatments through Western medicine (3 IUIs and 2 IVFs), I thought I would just give it a try.

I was scheduled to have my last IVF cycle and hoped that adding acupuncture as an adjunct therapy would increase my chance of getting pregnant. I did it because acupuncture had been shown to help improve pregnancy rate in a well designed clinical trial and it was the only one thing which I had not tried. At an age of 41 years old, I knew the odds were against me getting pregnant.

During my first visit with Kimberly, she examined my pulse and tongue and took a thorough medical history. After examination, she said that my body was very weak and because of my age, it would be difficult but not impossible for me to get pregnant. She recommended treatments with acupuncture and herbal medicines, and said that it might take at least a few months to improve my health to increase the chance of conception. I followed her recommendations, having acupuncture twice a week and taking herbal medicines at home. Often time, I fell asleep during the acupuncture sessions, probably because of the smoothing and relaxing effects of the therapy. I also felt the hormonal changes inside my body soon after taking the herbal teas.

After a few months of treatments with acupuncture and herbal medicines, the tingling in my legs resulting from the disc herniation gradually subsided and my back became stronger. I was more active and was able to do some of the heavy household work such as mowing the lawn. I remembered that even after the surgery, I had to lie in bed almost every night after dinner to rest my back. While I did not know whether the IVF treatment with acupuncture and TCM would be successful, I was thankful for Kimberly’s help in strengthening my back by improving my overall health. From a TCM perspective, my back got better because acupuncture and herbal medicines made my body stronger and healthier as a whole entity. This is unlike western medicine in which treatments are targeted towards specific body systems individually.

My last IVF cycle was delayed a few months because of the inadequate responses during ovarian stimulation. I felt hopeless quite often during this period of time, while Kimberly was always hopeful and encouraging that it might work. Finally, the IVF cycle was able to proceed in February, 2007. However, it failed again. At that point, I decided to stop pursuing any additional treatments including acupuncture but continued on the herbal supplement which I bought from Kimberly. Unexpectedly, I got pregnant two months later. During my pregnancy, I occasionally sought help from Kimberly at times when I had a lot of stress at work. Eventually, I delivered a healthy baby when I was 43 years old.

I attributed my success to a number of different factors including acupuncture, herbal medicines, and the hormones that I received during the fertility treatments, and my openness and perseverance. Perhaps, the relief of the tremendous pressure after giving up helped the situation as well. The whole experience changed my attitude about acupuncture and TCM. I now believe that these therapies could help and would definitely recommend them to someone (especially young women) with fertility issues. I also believe that they could help people with back problems. To me, I am grateful that Kimberly is my practitioner because she is caring, patient, and experienced and knowledgeable in acupuncture and TCM.
